Affix-ation: a free online prefix and suffix word game
Affix-ation is a free, browser-based word game for practicing prefixes and suffixes. Each day you get a root word and a 60-second timer, and you build as many real words as you can by adding affixes like re-, un-, -tion and -ful. It works on phone or desktop, needs no download, and is aimed at students, word lovers, and anyone learning how English words are built.
How to play
- Start with the day's root word (for example, act).
- Add prefixes and suffixes to build real words: act → action → reaction → reactionary.
- Score points for each valid word before the 60-second clock runs out, across three rounds a day.
- Play friends on a shared scoreboard and take on daily challenge modes.
What are prefixes and suffixes?
A prefix is a word part added to the front of a root to change its meaning — un- in unlock means “reverse.” A suffix is added to the end — -less in fearless means “without.” Together they are called affixes, and learning them helps you read, spell and understand thousands of related words.
